This is how not to layout a stock blank for a restocking job. On a 42 it just looks like trash. A decent classic pup gun deserves decent stock. Also that toe looks like it will chip just sitting in a safe. Angel of the toe on the recoil pad is wrong. And who needs that recoil pad on a .410? This stock does not match the original for end in any way. If I owned this gun the first thing I would do is take that stock off and put it where it truly belong. The fireplace.

Lets see the other side before commenting

I have a few old 410's with pads on them.I always believed they where cut for a small person, child, or woman. Later on the pad was added when the LOP needed to be increased. Just my thought.Right or wrong.

Perfectly bad layout on both sides. As to the pad need this is a obvious new restock so they should have made the stock full length and used a slim solid pad if they wanted a "recoil" pad to prevent slippage.

I wonder how long the stock has been on and how hard it has been used. Obviously a poor job on the pad and just bad layout of the stock. However, if it been on the gun for a long while then it may not be as bad as it looks.

That restock is not that old. Total lack of dings in stock is a hint. I thought there was one area of dings but other views showed it was just heavy ripple in finish. Nothing like thick coats of Truoil type finish slapped on. The inlet around the receiver is over in most areas but short or under the metal in others.

That stock is not going to break. It is a .410, with a through bolt. Recoil won’t kill it. The recoil pad will protect the toe area I know. It is just such a dreadful job in layout. And for what reason? That is a common lowest grade blank. $10.00 each. It is not a fancy blank which was laid out this way to show exhibition figure. They should have thrown that one back on the firewood pile and picked another. What it was I suspect was a blank the someone cut out into a near sized shotgun blank and they just used to. You see them on EBay all the time with a $9.99 starting price.

The gun in question is a 1940 gun. Standard rib fore end was not replaced and is not well matched in color. The seller would have been better off buying an original 42 take off stock off EBay for about $50.00. Then it would have been a better match looking like an all original gun.

The grip shape very closely resembles a prewar factory 42 stock. Could we be criticizing the Winchester people?

The pad is there to protect the stock when you set it on the floor! Absolutely necessary!

It may not be as bad as it appears. I certainly wouldn't stock a gun with the grain running almost 90 degrees from proper direction. It just looks wrong. BUT it's straight grained with no weird changes in grain direction into fancy figure. Also, it's a .410 so there isn't a lot of recoil stress. It will probably be OK on this gun but I doubt it would survive on a 12 ga gun.
