I have searched high and low for a book on building custom gunstocks. I would like to give it a try for the heck of it. I am a pretty good woodworker.....
But I can't find any books on it. Anything I find is talking about semi-inleted stocks. I want to give it a go from scratch. Any suggestions?
I am interested in both one pc and two pc stocks. Surely there must be a good reference out there somewhere.
Jerry

David Wesbrook, Professional Stockmaking, 54 bucks from Brownell's, www.brownells.com. I am not familiar with it however. Their catalog lists several other books, videos and pamphlets on various aspects of stockmaking, i.e., checkering, carving, bedding, etc. Then there are older classics by such as Howe, Whelen, Dunlap, etc. These are probably better than Wesbrook since they were written for beginners.

AFAIK David Wesbrook, Professional Stockmaking is out of print and Brownells no longer lists it. There are two copies available on Abebooks, $170 & $325.
It's quite detailed with great photos and shows how to build a bolt action rifle stock from a blank step by step. He goes into tools and has a very informative section at the end wherein many pros give their methods for finishing. If you ever come across a copy at a reasonable price it's worth having even if you never intend to build a stock. I often look through mine, marveling at the process.
The Linden book is a great insight into the thought process of stock builders of the past, much more folksy with great drawings, my copy still has the full size drawings of stocks for military actions. Lots of info on how to make your own tools. Monte Kennedy's book on checkering completes the set.

Jerry Funny, I always forget to look on Amazon, some great deals there. You'll like the book, I'm sure, nice find. Give us a review when you get it.

I always look to ABEbooks first, used books and out of print books including Amazon used books found there also. New titles also from the same sources as Amazon, and more. Maybe that is because ABEbooks is one of Amazon's companies.
