Any idea what might have been used to darken the lines and highlight this checkering?

The lines may be dark from years of dirt, but I believe the checkering "highlighted" because it is flat topped checkering, no points. The flat top can stay clean and reflect light.

Flat topped from wear for sure, but the lines are definitely colored some how.

It could be that the checkering was freshened, Then stained darker. The stain would not take to any varnished or oiled wood, only the newly cut wood.

By the way, that's a very nice Martini.

Regards, John

It's the Martini from the Sukalle thread.

If that was flat topped from wear I would think it would be more pronounced in some spots and less so in others. To my eye it's too consistent and was originally done with flat tops.
