Yes: the mating season is in full swing here and these two Gambel Quail are making the best of it. Sorry about the picture quality but I'm shooting from a dark room into the sunlight. As you can see; One is on the adjoining wall and the other is on the windowsill of my home. The one on the windowsill just finished a mock fight with his reflection in the glass. Jim

Should be a good season next year what with all the rain this winter!

I'm crossing my fingers that the breeding goes well. I'd like to go back out next winter and give them another try.

For those of you unaware of this I expect there's more quail in the subdivisions of Greater Phoenix than the surrounding desert. The subdivision environment is about ideal due to plenty of water and food with drip irrigation systems. There is also a lack of predators other than the occasional hawk or roving coyote and of course house cats. It's not unusual to flush 3 or 4 coveys on a short walk from my home. Our Pug,though certainly not hunting stock, loves jumping into a bush and flushing out a covey. Jim

You can call a male right into your lap with a locator call during the breeding season. I got some really good pics that way... Best-JB

I am not as optomistic for this season. I have no doubt there will be plenty of quail inside the city limits of Scottsdale where they have been subsisting on the golf courses and lawns. However, my son took a 27 mile hike through the Superstition Mountains a couple weeks back, starting at first light. He neither saw nor heard a single quail all day. The areas he went through normally have no hunting pressure and plenty of birds. The wild birds I fear are really reduced to very low numbers so it is probably going to take a couple years with adequate rain to get back good bird numbers again. The last 10 years have really been hard on the Gambel quail. Mearns have done better. Scalies are really scarce.
