After the Rangoon oil thread I can't wait to hear about this one.
I have a 1/2 Pint of Brownell's "SPERM OIL". What do I have and what is is used for???

I use it to lube my old doubles.

It's also a required ingredient for a Nuclear bomb.

I suspect it is oil that comes from a cavity in the heads of Sperm Whales. Either the actual stuff or something designed to replicate it's properties.

It's just what it says on the can....Sperm oil from a whale....very slick stuff.

I don't think harvesting it was the safest job in the world.

Baumgarten is an authority on it and might be their source. He should be along shortly. Many knife hones note its use.

A gunmaker near me swears by it.

Sperm Oil has that effect on some folk....

many traditonal muzzleloader shooters love it for many uses, patch lube, cleaning and lubrication.

At one time it was the best oil avalable for fine machinery

sperm oil, pale yellow oil obtained with spermaceti from the head cavity (spermaceti organ) and blubber of the sperm whale. Formerly used as a superior lighting oil and later as a lubricant, it was little used in the modern period apart from in certain toiletries and pharmaceuticals, although in 1950 advances in oil chemistry allowed it to be used in large quantities for the manufacture of soap.

After removal of spermaceti and treatment with sulfur, sperm oil provided excellent lubricants that resisted extreme pressures. These were commonly used in mechanical transmissions, high-speed machinery, and precision instruments. The oil was also hardened to make textile sizings. Saponification yielded fatty acids for soap manufacture and fatty alcohols for cosmetics and detergents.
