Selous plates were not used as a stock repair but rather a preventative measure. I have a Selous plated Gibbs on my bench currently and I can tell you they were there from the start on this stock. It would be very labor intensive to try to repair a broken stock this way. I believe in the factory a buck was made to form the sheet steel over, the stock is fit, rough shaped and then inlet for the plates, finally being fixed in place by a multitude of timed woodscrews. No easy task and not inexpensive in todays world.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

I bought an early Cogswell & Harrison hammer gun featuring Mr. Harrison's innovative ejector system. Alas! that mechanism excessively thinned the front portion of the butt stock, and sometime in the course of the gun's history it broke there and was professionally repaired. I wanted the repair done better, but was advised by Kirk Merrington that it could not be done. So, it occurred to me: why not stabilize it decisively with Selous plates?
