Someone told me recently that the damascus pattern on his 1900 was a fake etched-in pattern, done as a marketing ploy since people preferred damascus to steel then. I wasn't aware Remington was doing this. If fake, it totally fooled me. Can someone verify this with regards to 1900's (and others if applicable)? If so, I wish more companies would produce fake damascus, because it was beautiful.

Are you sure it wasn't a 1894 gun?

Yes, I'm sure. He had an 1894 there also.

This sounds like a shady dealer with his own "marketing ploy"; trying to make a customer believe that his damascus barrelled shotgun is fluid steel.....I know of no Remington barrel of "faked" damascus....

I have collected the Remington model 1894 and 1900 for over 30+ year's. Remington never used fake Damascus on the double's at any time. If it look's like Damascus or Twist, it is. Terry

It is not uncommon for builders of contemporary muzzleloaders (flintlock) to create a damascus-like pattern on modern steel barrels using a bleach solution, then browning the barrels overtop this. The bleach adds dark stripes to the metal that if done correctly appears like damascus. However, if a barrel finished like this and a true damascus steel barrel are compared side by side, the fake will jump out at you. I believe Lewis Drake had one of these on his website a while back.. He may still have it.

It is a VERY COMMON argument by SHADY DEALERS. The fake Damascus is only found on very cheap European guns. It is not found very often.

and 'Faux Twist'

I am not an expert but I have a very hard time believing either of those nice guns are fake Damascus or twist. The lower gun looks like twist that was acid etched for effect, not fake. The above WR looks like a very handsome, honest twist. Why do you believe they are fake?
