Robert,

I have always called and heard called in English the Lefacheaux unlocking and unlocking lever as an underlever, being under gun. It swings horizontally to right side of gun on opening.

There are some Husqvarnas than had (known in Swedish as) Anglais system, which has a very similar underlever, except that it is back under trigger guard when in locked position. It also swings horizontally to right side of gun on opening. The one you show pictures of is this kind.

The Lefacheaux has the hinged "foreend" (if you want to call it that) to which the barrels are attached by a small underlever. The foreend on Anglais system is a separate part.

There is third underlever system, known in Swedish as Clef a l Anglais, on models 31 and 32. Don't know if it opens horizontally or vertically, guess from picture in vertical plane.

There is even a fourth underlever design, the Roux, on Models 40 and 41, made 1879-1883. It appears to open in vertical plane.

Like the older Lefacheaux system hammer doubles, these guns generally had Damascus barrels.

All informations from Husqvarna Hagelvapen 1877-1977.

I have never seen any Husqvarna underlevers with other than Lefacheaux system.

Niklas

The lock-up of the gun that is posted has been known to me as the "Jones rotary" or "screw grip" but I see what you mean. Americans are very specific in what is meant by a "lever action"...the Winchester lever action repeater, Stevens single shots such as the 44 1/2 are considered a lever action, as is the Ruger No.1.
Greener called that type (pictured above) the double grip, but I don't trust anything in his book "The Gun" and it's development...but again, I now see how the rotary underlever is just a variation of the Lefaucheux (correct spelling), ...I'll have to re-check and see what Geoffrey Boothroyd has to say on the subject...
Thanks for pointing out the similarities to me, I had not realized that the Jones lever and the Lefaucheux system were exactly the same except one has the English key, and the other the French key...Bob Chambers
