I have heard the "traditional " way of coating the barrels after rust bluing is warming them to the touch and wiping them with boiled linseed oil.. True?

True. But warming not to the touch, but much hotter. boiling water through barells, then apply linseed oil all over and hang up barrels in warm and dry place for 1 day.

I heated mine with a propane torch, warm to the touch. The difference in what Geno stated is that the pores will open more and let the linseed oil in. Mine is more of a coating, and the finish does get hard, don't know how long it will last but is eay to re-do.

I use a saturated cottom ball dipped in the linseed oil and go over the entire barrel.

Ok so lay it on and let it sit. Kinda like the rusting solution. Don't wipe it down just put a thin coat on and let it sit in a warm dry place for a day or two. I have them hanging over my hot water tank. Not a hot place but warm and gets circulation.

This might be a dumb question, but why would you put linseed oil on your barrels.what does it do for them, and is this a standard practice.

It's an old process. I heard that Boss used to do their barrels this way. It "soaks in" as a protectant and makes the barrels black and glossy.

I have used an old can of yellow axel grease the same way for a long time. Some body taught me that in the 60's seemed to work OK.
