Tony, I'm having computer problems, fortunately Mm son in law is here for a couple of days with my daughter and granddaughter and he is a computer whiz. My gun is not plain like yours, it's all over fine bouquet and scroll and does not have that lump on the LH sideplate, what is that? My barrels have a hole, that's why I'm hoping to find donor Damascus barrels to sleeve onto this gun. I'll send pics when I can, mike

Isn't that lump probably (if I understand your question) the take-down for the locks?
It's a nice gun, and in proof! What could be better.

For great cutout views of this action go to "The Modern Sportsman's Gun and Rifle", at google books. Here's the link: http://books.google.com/books?id=OLwUAAA...;q&f=false. The Lang action is illustrated and discussed from page 201 to 204.

Mike, it's something to do with the locks as Genelang says. It IS great to have the original barrels and in proof from 2010 that's for sure. The lock mechanism is fabulous, inherantly complex, but just unique. I love it, plain or not. T

A very unusual and good-looking gun, you can tell by its looks it's light and going to swing like a song... what gauge is it?

I'd like to hear more about that trick with the copper sulphate. Neat gun for sure.

Hey fellas, first of it's a 12 bore/gauge. Second, Copper Sulphate. Basically strike up the barrels, get em nice and shiny. Right, then copper sulphate bunged/thrown into warm water..I just use ad lib but basically what it does is that it draws contrast out of the softer metal in the twist and thus the wind in the barrels. It's then really nicely setup for the browning... Dump the barrels into the solution for about 30 minutes...then wash off and brush it out of everywhere. Make sure you wear gloves...no finger oil needed from this point on! T

Thanks. So the copper sulphate is a prelim to actual rust/card process of re-browning?

Ballistix 999 I HAVE A JOSEPH LANG 12 BORE UNDER LEVER AND THE RIGHT SIDE PLATE HAS A SMALL SELECTOR JUST LIKE A SAFETY CATCH,WICH ALLOWS YOU TO SELECT THE SAFETY CATCH TO BE ETHER A AUTOMATIC OR MANUAL SAFETY. I ALL SO HAVE A NOTHER 16 BORE JOSEPH LANG UNDER LEVER THAT HAS THIS AREA OF THE SIDE PLATE FILLED WITH A DUMMY SCREW. IN THE LAST 10 YEARS I HAVE ONLY COME ACROSS ONE OTHER J LANG WITH THIS SAFETY CATCH SELECTOR. WHEN MY GUNSMITH STRIPED MY GUN WITH THE SAFETY CATCH SELECTOR HE TOLD ME THE MECHANISM WAS VERY FINE,MAY BE THE MECHANISM WAS TO FINE AND LANGS DISCONTINUED THIS SAFETY SELECTOR. I HAVE SEEN OTHER LANG UNDER LEVERS WITH THIS AREA OF THE SIDE PLATE FILLED IN. ITS INTERESTNG TO SEE THAT YOUR GUN HAS COCKING INDICATOR HOLES ON THE TOP STRAP FILLED IN, IT WOULD SEEM THAT YOUR GUNS FRAME WAS MADE TO ACCOMADATE COCKING INDICATORS,MAY BE THEY FELL OUT FAVOUR AND THE HOLES WERE FILLED IN.

Extremely interesting your post there sidelever! Indeed inside that little lump the other side is some sort of mechanism that effects the safety...will look into it further...can you post any pics of yours please?
