I was recently reminded that I needed to post a review of the G&H recoil pad I bought. I will be purchasing them exclusively frrom now on. The one I got is a red-orange color leaning more orange than red. It will look right at home on any English style rifle or Large bore early American style gun - as well as being equally appropriate for any shotgun. It has the return spur on the top that is common and a nice black spacer made of significantly rigid plastic. My favorite thing about these pads, however, is the screw plugs. The Galazan "Correct Period Pad" and the "Original Silvers Pad" have large plugs approx 1/2" in diameter. This one has plugs approx 1/4" which will make for a more proportioned looking pad on some shorter / smaller stocks. The larger plugs really start to crowd the toe if the butt end isn't full sized heel-to-toe, in my opinion.
Furthermore, the service at Griffin & Howe was spectacular. Without going into too much detail, I talked with Jim Kromka about the order and he was most pleasing - stating at one point that they like to treat all their customers the same, whether they are ordering a Purdey or a recoil pad. Somebody order a Purdey so we can get a comparison of the service.
Anyway, there's the review. I'll be happy to post some pictures, but be patient - the opening weekend of dove season starts in the morning and I have several friends coming in to town to help me get rid of my excess whiskey stock.

Thanks Bryndon, Has anyone fitted a Griffen & How recoil pad? I'd be curious about grinding qualities and toe staytuckeddownidness?

The #3 Silvers pad actually has plugs that are 11/16" in diameter and the Griffin pad has plugs that are 1/2" in diameter. The hole spacing of the Silvers is 3 1/8" and the spacing of the Griffin pad is 3 1/4". Steven, the Griffin pad should lie flat because there is a 1/2" metal flat washer in each hole. If I think I can bend that washer, I just drop another one in on top of it. If you use flat bottom screws, there should be no problem. I bought my first dozen Griffin pads in 1986 and have been using them ever since.

Some of us like to use screws with countersinks as it is the only way the pad will relocate perfectly, and IMHWBE flat bottom screws don't cure toe staytuckeddownidness.

OK, I tried. I have to admit I haven't used the G&H pad on many guns, maybe twenty or so, but my system has worked. I think that pinning a pad is preferable to countersunk screws, but I am not a gunsmith so won't pursue my opinion. You don't think the countersink has any relationship to the rising of the toe of the pad?

A flathead screw with a bushing will keep the pad located. Size the bushing to the hole i the pad. Tom

How does the G&H pad compare with the Decelerator and the Limbsaver for recoil absorption?

The Griffin is softer than the Silvers like a case hardened nail is harder than petrified wood.
