My SXS shoots straight and flat in the right barrel and a little high and to the right in the left barrel.

Can the left barrel be adjusted to make it shoot straight?
how is this done?

I'd suggest getting a couple of friends to fire the shotgun at a paper or steel target and see if they get the same results, if they don't, it could be your fault and you need an expert instructor to check your style of shooting.

If they get the same results as you, then it is the gun. Depending on age, maker, whether it is in warranty or not it could work out to be quite expensive as adjusting may mean the removal of the barrel ribs and the barrels be adjusted by melting the solder holding them together and adjusting the divergence and elevation of one of the barrels. The ribs would then have to be refitted and the altered barrels refitted to the action. The barrels would also need refinishing.

This is not a job for your local gunsmith, it is a very specialised job and will be very expensive. You will have to ask yourself "Is it worth it?" Unless it is a gun from a famous maker, (unlikely if it shoots as you describe) or a collectors item, you really only have two choices:-

1. Learn to live with it in it's current condition.
2. Trade it in for a shotgun that patterns well.

Harry.

That could be corrected by suitably rechoking the left barrel. IMHO of course.
With kind regards,

If you have enough barrel wall thickness, Briley can often add choke tubes to the mix and correct POI issues.

Point low left on the second shot. Its cheap too. I have a friend who had Briley fix the POI and was very happy. I don't recall the cost though.

Hi, Briley can instal an eccentric choke tube in your left bbl. The cost is $65.00 additional to what kind choke tube you want (thin walls in either steel or lead)installed.

Briley needs to have a pattern sheet sent with the bbl.

The best thing to do is call them for any questions you have or details they need.

Best of luck to you!!!!

Greg

I would want to do the test with tight chokes (if it is choke tubed) at fairly close range, maybe 20 yds. Do it at least ten times on the same piece of paper. It will actually cut a hole in the paper if you are consistent with your hold point. That will give you an accurate picture of what is going on. If one barrel is truly shooting to a different POI than the other, it would be expensive to change, as brother Harry suggests, and would involve stripping and relaying the ribs and releveling them but not refitting the ribs or the barrels. Then a clean up and reblack. If its a good gun and you like it, it might be worth it. It could be that both barrels shoot high and then you are getting into a stock fitting issue; that's not a big thing. It may just be a matter of bending the stock to fit you. Hope this helps.

POI can be corrected by carefully removing a small amount of steel from the choke area of the barrel. Remove the metal from the side you want the pattern to go toward. The POI will move over just like adjusting a sight. Go slow and polish it afterwards. The choke will be enlarged slightly but I wouldn't care.

Jim,
Is the process you describe referred to as LAPPING? Do you have any recommendations as to the best gunsmith for the job?
Thank you.

Bob Day, in Pico Rivera, CA. http://www.americhoke.com/ A recommendation from Chuck H.
Bob did a very good job for me, on a hammer Bernardelli. It had chrome lined bores and I wanted the chokes opened up and the POI was a bit off on one barrel. The total work was around $300 but the results were exactly what I wanted. I sold that gun to someone on this board, maybe he'll chime in to verify that the gun shoots as intended. I wish I had kept it! I have done it myself, on other guns. You can make a scraper out of a 3 cornered file, mounted on a wooden handle. You can also make a honing tool out of a dowel, a little smaller than the bore and wrapped with emery paper. Spin it with an electric drill motor or in the chuck of a metal lathe. A .410 can be done with a 3/8" rat-tail file. Put a piece of plastic tubing on the small end, to protect the barrel.

P.S. There's an article about doing it with a scraper in one an old NRA Gunsmithing book.
