Happy New Year, well not yet here but on the way.

This showed up this afternoon in Alaska. Sure as heck not something I was looking for but had to jump.

It started life as a NRA sporter, was sent to Niedner's for a new barrel. The bolt has the Niedner damasking (sp?) and a professional two panel bolt knob.

The NRA stock was worked over, not in the Shelhamer league but not too bad. The old recoil pad is hard as a rock so that will have to be replaced.

I was worried about the condition of the bore but it is perfect as the day it left Niedners. The blue is darn near 100% except under the wood. I looks like some water got under there and much spotting where the blue is gone.

I'm sure you are wondering why I bought it, this should answer the question.
I hope everyone finds the treasure they are looking for in the coming year.

For the ones who follow such things the Niedner number is 1718 which would be Circa 1939-40.

The .400 Niedner is based on the Newton case shooting a 300gr bullet at 2700fps. A Kodiak Island varmint rifle.

Very well done Michael,

I wish I could be so lucky, all I got was burst water pipe in the loft. Fortunately I shut off the cold water supply at night, so the damage was limited to the five gallons of water spilling from the header tank.

Maybe to match the abruptness you feel when you pull the trigger on a 400. smile

Yes, I could tell right away that it was not Shelhamer's work. I need to take a little better pictures of the checkering and bolt knob. I was in a hurry yesterday.

Not the quality of stock for a Silvers pad beside they are on the hard side to begin with. What modern (no white line) pad that will tame this monster?

This makes the total number of 400-Niedners I know about at two.
Niedner barrel number 1740.
This is the other one, stock by G&H.
