As many of you know I was formerly the north american rep for now defunct Teague barrel lining process. I was informed yesterday by one of my contacts in the British trade of a new process in the works for restoring shotgun barrels using a type of plating. I do not know any of the details yet. As I understand it, the first set is being looked at by the Birmingham proof master and more info should be available shortly.

Steve,
I am hopeful that the plating process will prove successful!!!

Me too. We really need all the alternatives possible to rebarreling fine old guns that have been neglected or abused.

Steve, I read somewhere that electroplate nickel has a tensile strength of 50-70 ksi. That is lower than modern barrel steels by about 30-40%, but it gives some perspective of what electroplated metal tensile strength is. There have been processes of electroplating other metals that may give higher strengths. Electroplating has their difficulties too. Pitting and roughness from contamination of the tanks or parts, etc.. Sounds like a challenging process for barrels. I hope the outfit is successful.

That's great! I remember asking on a previous thread about lining if plating the inside of barrels was a possibility. Very interested to see how this turns out. I would imagine it's a lot less expensive than lining too? If so, you may really be on to something.

I've heard stories from reliable sources of a notorious American gun dealer having out-of-proof bbls chrome plated and then polished back to original specs.
I was told that these guns were then imported over here and sold for hefty profits.
Don't know if it's true, but this dealer was the master at this kind of stuff.
If it was sneaky, he did it - stock splicing, turning 16s into 20s, having "Best Quality" stocking done in Spain, seamless sleeving way before anyone knew it could be done, etc....

I have a feeling this would work very well. After all Nikasil plating has been being used in small engines and even some cars (Jaguar, Mercedes, BMW, Porsche) for over 30 years. If it can stand the rub of chrome molly piston rings for 100,000 miles I am sure it can handle some lead shot. It may even be able to make steel shot in a Damascus gun a possibility. To get a 251cc to 500cc engine cylinder coated is $399.00 with a new piston set. I just don't know if there tanks could take 30+ inch barrels. I have a gun I would have done tomorrow if it was offered.

I have a gun I would have done tomorrow if it was offered. Me too, as long as the cost is reasonable. I wonder if it would have the effect of tightening chokes, i.e., jug choking?

Interesting question on the effect to the choke.
My guess would be not likely much effect if the addition of a uniform thickness would be standard through the length of the bore then the constriction would be roughly the same in that both the bore and choke grew the same thickness.
Choke is relative difference between the bore and muzzle and as such the growth of booth would sustain about the same percentage difference. Perhaps a slight tightening, but not likely measureable down range.
All that said while I hope it is true that one day I could send my otherwise good condition gun into a shop and have the few pittings addressed with plating it is a dream that I have not seen real proof of accomplishment yet.
