I'm looking at a gun locally made by CH Smith Birmingham. Had all the proper nitro proofs etc. It's a 16ga but the barrels have been sleeved. Wanted to know if anyone has any knowledge as it seems to be there is no information out there. Asking price is $1299 but I think it could be had for less. I'm looking for something to shoot and it has beautiful engraving on it. Just not sure of the manufacturer

If it's Charles Smith or C H Smith and sons, the firm also traded from Newark on trent. I believe the name is still alive. I'll check up as I looked for info recently after measuring the bores on a lovely 12 from around 1900 with nitro proofed damascus barrels.

The one i looked at had the Newark on Trent address on the rib. It was a really well finished gun with a beautiful figured stock. Unfortunately, I've lost the memory card with pictures of it on.
If it ever turns up I'll post a couple.
I couldn't say for certain if there were more than one firms with the name.
Hope the links help you in your search.

This is what IGC has of any relevance:

Address1 Unknown Address
Address2 123 Steelhouse Lane
Address3 17 Stafford Street
Address4 92 Aston Street
Address5 New Buildings, 63 Price Street

Notes
Charles Hubert Smith & Co claimed establishment in 1840, but they were not recorded until 1897 when they occupied 123 Steelhouse Lane, Birmingham. In 1922 the firm was recorded as Charles H Smith, and in about 1924 it became Charles H Smith & Sons. In 1961 the firm moved to 17 Stafford Street, and in 1964 it became a limited company, Charles H Smith & Sons Ltd.

In 1967 the company appears to have closed in order to trade under a new limited company, C H Smith & Sons (Gunmakers) Ltd. In 1970 the company moved to 92 Aston Street, and in 1984 they moved to New Buildings, 63 Price Street. In 1993 the limited company was liquidated and the firm trades today as C H Smith & Sons. The firm appears to have operated as gunmakers to the trade from about the turn of the century.
Other Info
The firm sold cartridges under the names "The Invincible" and "The Abbey".

And this one:

I do not believe that Smith of Newark has any connection with Smith of Birmingham . Smith of Newark is now owned and operated by Roy Martin of Dunham on Trent .

Spoke to a colleague in the Birmingham trade today and asked about Smiths . Mary Smith who ran the company retired a couple of years ago . The shop was taken over /continued by a long term employee but has not continued under the name of CH Smith so I would assume that Mrs Smith still holds title to the company .I can also assume that as the company is no longer trading that the current occupant of their old shop has no access to any , if any records or other archive materials should they exist .
