I'm looking at a side-by-side on the Internet for sale. Haven't seen the proof marks yet, however, the barrel rib is inscribed "Acier Compound." Can I assume this inscription is French. The shotgun (boxlock) appears to be circa 1900, no external hammers, with blued steel barrels. No idea of the gunmaker - yet.

Most likely Belgian. Don't know if "Compound" is a brand, trade name, or description (like maybe laminated?).
