I just picked up this 1879 Purdey 10 gauge hammer gun (30"). It's on the right next to a W.& C. Scott Premier Grade 10 circa 1881 with the Tri-Plex lever grip.(32") It's about a 3/4 pound lighter than the Scott. Both are choked improved modified.

The wood is original...I don't think the heel and toe clips are.

The gun came with a set of Briley full length 20 gauge tubes.

I've been trying to buy the gun from a friend for about 3 years...he finally gave in.
The pull is 14 & 1/4" with drop points of 1 & 1/4" and 2 & 1/8", same as the Scott. I think I'm going to shoot it better than any gun I've ever shot.

They appear to have been cared for the last century or so. Very nice specimens, should be able to knock off a rook or two.

I also would shoot that gun better than any gun I've ever shot, and I'm nearly blind in my right eye and shoot a crossover gun. I could shoot that gun well with a bag over my head.

I must lead a sheltered life. Never seen trigger guard channel ploughed out right to the grip cap. Seems a bit "rationalized" somehow cf. to the level of decor everywhere else. Is that flash foto in the rock garden, Joe?

Bob they both feel like serious artillery pieces when they close...the Scott is like closing a bank vault and the Purdey is like closing a Swiss bank door lubed with Whale oil....Other than that I think the quality of the two is very close

Rabbit I guess the long grip is an English thing...they lock under the pistol grip caps. The Purdey cap is engraved steel the Scott is horn.
I think the Scott sold for more money when new.
