While I was working away on this gun during the weekend, some of you were discussing the different methods that could be used to bring a coin finish back to its original glory, this nice little gun was the victim of owner neglect...he was too busy to properly clean the gun after a cold december shoot and this was the outcome,....it looked like the first rusting treatment on a barrell browning job!

After an hour of fitting drivers to very fine screw slots the gun was totally disassembled and the clean up began using a stiff bristle brush and a commercial cleaning paste that removes rust and discoloration,...it has a mild acidic base and will pull rust right out of the engraving without damaging or dulling the cutting which so often happens when people try to do this with the wrong abrasives

Washing under the tap with warm water and srubbing with detergent will remove all paste residue and while the steel is still warm I use compressed air to remove all moiture.

After all the parts are clean and dry a bit of permanent flat black ink is rubbed in to the engraving to make it stand out a bit and let dry for a few hours...

The gun is then oiled and reassembled and these are the results!

Good as new!.....I bet you after he gets the bill he won't forget to clean the little 20 anymore

All best,

CJ

Wow, what a difference!

What commercial cleaning paste did you use?

Also, care to share your technique for inking the engraving?

CJ,
Nice work and explanation. But, no fair! Those pics were taken using two at least different lighting/background conditions. They present the assembled gun such that it shows it looking like a perfect computer generated model. The magenta tint from the fluorescent lighting and white backdrop of the assembled gun give a cold cleaner appearance advantage from the incandescent lighting and/or red backdrop. (frankly, I like the lighting of the pics showing the disassembled parts best. Warmer and more realistic looking) As you can tell, I don't like that fluorescent lighting that has become so popular among the pro-photog gun publications. But still, nice work.

Chuck,...I guess things are not always as they appear to be, the first bunch of pictures are taken indoors under artificial light because I started the job after dark!.....the rest were taken outside my shop in the shade next aftrnoon

If you look at the mirror finish on the lock pins you will see my reflection with the sky in the backgound

CJ,
Nice work, what acidic paste do you use?
As stated earlier I use toothpaste or jewellers rouge, if 6x0 wire wool and oil won't move it with a gentle massage. Then washed over with satin black.

CJO: Will you be at Eganville this weekend?
I unavoidably missed the show last year, but your table and display of work in 2005(?) was a real turn-on.

Ian, I was planning to be there but I got the dates confused and committed to judge the NAVHDA test on Wolfe Island instead,...maybe next year
