Any good examples? Would this be swamped or a game rib?

That is a concave or game rib. A swamped rib is higher front and rear than in the middle. Common on continental guns, less so other places.

No such thing as a swamped barrel, but a swamped rib can best be described as the ugliest rib you can put on a sxs shotgun. But it can also be described as a rib that ramps down from the breach and stays below the height of the barrels.

Your photo looks to me like a swamped rib as it is definitely below the height of the barrels. And a little cockeyed.

. The British have made swamped rifle barrels forever, and American makers use them too. It's a way to achieve optimal balance for a given length.

One really cant tell from that view if it is a swamped rib or not. We would need to see a view from the breech end, looking toward the muzzles.

This gun has a swamped rib:

Make note of it, ed.

Bill, using the logic used in the way you stated it, the purpose of a horse is to make horse shit. Yes, a horse makes dandy horse shit, but, the horse has other uses and purposes. There are multiple ways to achieve balance, involving the rib, or not.
I always thought the ugliest thing hung on a double gun was a tie, between beaver tail forend, and double beads.

Carry on.

Ted

According to the Hunter Arms records, there were only 5 known and documented swamp rib guns: an Eagle and a set of Crown grades in 12, 16, 20, and 410 that remain as a set.

Just so you won't remain ignorant, Bill, we're speaking of sxs shotgun's top ribs here, not rifle barrels. You're welcome.

Drew,
I don't know what that rib is on those two Elsies, but it is not a swamped rib. It is a flat rib with some type of odd raised portion at the breach. Hard to really know for sure without seeing the entire length of the barrels, but they appear in the photo to be flat.

Ted,
I believe you missed the part in Bill's post where he refers to rifle barrels. I missed that part myself at first reading. He is quite correct when it comes to British rifles being balanced this way. I have owned several British rifles with barrels profiled this way.

Steve,
Can you explain a bit what a swamped rifle barrel looks like, or better yet, a photo of an example? Thanks.
