For both elk and deer, accompanied by my 20-year old and a goodly number of reliable old friends. Don't know how many of these particular "adventures" remain for me as 1: Colorado has seriously monetized "big game hunting", 2: my back isn't what it used to be, and 3: productive hunting real-estate is getting ever-harder to access here. As a further complication, all my elk hunting partners are becoming ever-more geriatric and unavailable because of other commitments (familial usually). We either need to find new blood, better medication, or fatter wallets.

I'm back. It was good week, but not without challenges.

Snow changes everything, eh?

My son and I both had deer and elk tags, but as soon as we got out into the field we could tell that the warnings from the Colorado Department of Wildlife about a bad winter kill last year were valid. Where we would normally expect to see lots of game we simply didn't.

Didn't happen this year...(this was 2020)

But, this did. My boy got a small doe, so all is good in my book. Killed with a pretty little .270 Winchester lightweight he was lent by my buddy (much easier to carry and less-hard on small deer than his grandfather's rifle). We had a great time working two separate units, one for deer and one for elk. He had to go back to school on Sunday but he seemed to really enjoy himself and the crew we had assembled and he wants to do it again next year (music to my ears!).

Pretty country up there (the fog is from a reservoir that hasn't frozen over quite yet)...

but, there are a few less-pretty things too.

Gentlemen, thankyou as always. My boy got his deer yesterday, so hooray! Small victories seem like big ones when it comes to kids, eh? I am enjoying the company of all of my compatriots and savoring the feel of walking in good country, rifle in hand. More to come, hopefully.

p.s My 20 year old will be 52 ( YES 52) on his next birthday !!
I will be 75 in two weeks and the hills have gotten much taller.

My 20 year olds are 43 and 41, I'll be 75 in 5 weeks and the hills haven't gotten much taller - they've become damn mountains. But, thankfully, I'm still able to get out fishing and hunting;

I got word this morning that a fishing acquaintance died yesterday reminding me that fishing and hunting trips with friends become more precious with each passing year. Go while you still can and enjoy time with your friends as long as y'all are able before all that remains are memories.
