Looking for info on an old Pape 12ga. Its a large action with 3 inch chambers. Barrels are 30.5" long and 3/4 choked. The gun weighs 8lbs.

Is Newcastle-On-Tyne considered a Birmingham gun. The proof-marks are Birmingham. There is SUP with 2 crowns over it, 12-76 and also 850 Bar. There is also a R with some symbol over it.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

this is a very nice Pape, proved for 3-inch cartridges. The action was probably sourced from Scott's in Birmingham. But strictly, Newcastle-upon-Tyne is not considered Birmingham... even though Pape may well have had the gun built there.

Beautiful gun, but handsome describes it perfectly.

Thanks everyone.

Since it has 3" chambers I am assuming it must be a water-fowling or live pigeon gun.

Oberndorf,

Pape did manufacture shotguns from scratch, for many years, he had his own workshops in Newcastle upon Tyne in Collingwood Street, his retailing Shop was in Westgate Road, some 250 yards away. If you can let me have the serial number (by PM if you wish) I should be able to give you a year of manufacture or sale.
Birmingham was the nearest Proof House to Newcastle upon Tyne so it was logical that Papes guns were sent there for proofing.

They sound like much newer proof marks than the gun looks - unless they're newer barrels, or a later re-proof...

I'd tend to think pigeon gun, rather than 'fowler - looking that ornate and highly finished. What's the rest of the gun look like? Rounded grip? Heavier weight? It is, indeed, a very handsome gun.

Very nice! I wish Tony were around to see it, given his soft spot for Pape guns.
