I am traveling to Austin, TX to visit a daughter for the holidays. I have never been there. Are there any higher-end gunshops I should check out? (higher-end means not: Big 5, Bass Pro, Dick's etc. but you all knew that) Museums? Other sporting or historical sites I should see? Thanks, Lou M

It's been years since I've been there, but McBrides gun shop on Lamar (and 35th or so) had a very nice selection. Family owned shop - and heavy volume. You won't see the same guns on consectutive visits...
Although all of that may have changed in the last 10 years...

might as well hit the Cabela's in Buda while you are there.

Sportsman's Finest, 12434 Bee Cave Road (FM 2244),(1/2 block from HWY. 71, Austin,TX 78738, has some pretty nice guns. Neither this store,Cabelas or McBrides has the selection you'll see in Houston. Steve

ditto on Sportsman's Finest.....lotta eye candy there. Get ready for some of the worst traffic you've ever encountered. Austin did not plan ahead for the rapid sprawl that has taken place. Allow plenty of time.

Thanks guys. Rockdoc and GaryW, Sportsman's Finest was a great suggestion. I found a magazine for my Ruger Mark I and those are usually on backorder at the mail order places. They had a full counter of people checking out guns. Guns that aren't of the type we'd read much about here. Swoobie, McBride's was also a fine store. Wall-to-wall people when I visited, also on the 27th. Lots of neat stuff and clothes. Postoak, Cabelas is penciled in for the 1st. Thanks again, Lou M

Lou, Did you check out the small side room at Sportsman's Finest. That's where they have their more expensive doubles behind the counter. Steve
