That's pretty neat. I've never seen or heard of it before. Any idea when it was made and how long Beretta sold it in the US?

Information is hard to come by if you don't know what you are looking for. Not many are in the US as they were expensive in the 60s My Martinies and win 63 have moved down a notch since this came to me. It will shoot one hole groups at 50yds with Eley practice amo. Fed and fired everything I have tryed. This is one of those things that I think someone has to die before it is passed on. I traded my mod 96 swede to a 22 collector for it. Beretta also made the early Weatherbys. There is another version that locks the bolt and can be used as a singleshot or semi auto.

Perhaps somebody can confirm or deny that this is Beretta's take on an older Walther .22 auto design. I believe that they arrived on the US market in the early 1950s and were made in several finishes, one fairly plain and very "European" and a later one in a more "American" style. Weatherby used Italian-made ones at first, then switched to Miroku-made ones, which (I think) they still sell. There is a tube-fed Miroku/Weatherby version as well.

Nice guns, despite the current "California" styling; I prefer them to the Browning "takedown" .22 auto, which is "neater" in many ways, but just doesn't shoot well for me. (A .22 can be just TOO "trim," I find). Wish Weatherby'd go back to the original /European/Beretta-style stock and finish, tho.

I think I remember these being sold under the model name "Gyrfalcon" back in the day when Beretta was calling all its models by "cat" and "raptor" names. May have been "Greyfalcon"....

I did find that Beretta bought the patents from Walther. I also have a 24 Remington ehich has the bad habit of throwing hot brass down my shirt sleeve. I have spent a lot of time messing with the 22rf this past year as it isw convienent for me to shoot out of my garage. 63 Winchester, 74 Winchester. 24 Remington. 12c Remington 1903 Savage and this Breetta is the best of the lot. It is as acurate as my two martini target guns.
It is my suspicion that Beretta aquired some people from Walther early on Their 92 pistol is very similiar to the P38. The early 22 was the Gyrfalcon. Only Identification on this gun is calibre. Aut 22lr.and mfg. Beretta Gardone vt Made in Italy. and a 1965 proof stamp. It also has an adjustable trigger that breaks 18 oz. every time. This is how it looks out of the stock

The Browning "take down" .22 autos just don't fit me in their more modern forms, Belgian, Japanese and Chinese. The Browning/Remington 24 probably would fit me OK, but I've never had the (apparently kinda picante) pleasure of shooting one.

I SUSPECT that part of the appeal of the Beretta .22 auto was that it bears a passing resemblance to the Beretta model 1938 SMG and its later variants, which were very popular with the military and police for a long time. A .22 that works the same way (sort of) would gain some appeal from the resemblance.

Thanks for the original pic and the "look inside"!

The 1956 catalog shows 3 models. The top of the line included "an especially designed" scope.

By 1969 they were using the term "Super Sport" for some models. That catalog also lists the Beretta W.XXII model.

Here is a thread on Rimfire Central:
