2holer I stole this picture from the gunbroker Remington hammergun you just linked to:

A couple of comments on the muzzles in this picture. It has keels and to my eye the rib is much closer to the top of the barrels than what I remember the rib on the Remington this thread is about. Also the tubes more than touch each other.

Point acknowledged on the .730" bore.

That did catch my eye. Is that standard? Very attractive I think.

Oops, sorry. I missed reading that line of your post. So it is not standard.

Thanks!

Since this thread I have looked at a lot of 1889s. What denotes the different grades?

Here are photos of the milled out watertable and barrel flats on my 16 ga. grade 1 Mod 1889.
I believe the grade differences in the lower grades are the type of steel used in the barrels:
Grade 1 Decarbonized steel
Grade 2 Twist steel
Grade 3 Damascus steel
Grade 4 I believe this is where the engraving starts and it gets more detailed as the grades go up. If you want to really learn all there is to know about these guns get a copy of Charles Semmers book Remington Double Shotguns. It's the most complete analysis of these guns that I know of. Copies are available from the Double Gun Journal.

In all my Remingtons from 1873, 1882, 1889's, and 1894's, the chokes start 7" back from the muzzle. They all have keels and touch. Both my 1889's are the " light weight " model 12 gauges that have a milled water table and barrel flats. On the right side of the water table in the milled area there is a number 2 stamped which I believe is the grade. Mine have twist barrels and no engraving and that makes them a grade 2. Paul
