One of my local gun dealers has a very lightly used Arrieta 20 gauge round action SLE with "Griffin & Howe" and "Bernardsville, NJ" in gold lettering on the floor plate. The gun is in nearly new condition, even though it's 20 years old according to the serial number, and has a leather case (perhaps also the oil bottles, snap caps, etc. - the sales guy didn't know and was too busy to check at the time I was there), with only the most minor of handling marks on the butt and a tiny bit of wear on the breech face case colors. Barrel blue appears to be as new.

Without the G&H name, I'd probably expect this gun to bring $3250-3500 in today's used market. Is there a premium for the G&H version from the 1990s? If so, based on the condition, what would you consider a fair price?

Thanks.

Is it the the one shown on their website with 26" bbls. and a 12 1/4" LOP?

I place no extra value, on modern "house" names when the same gun can be had without their name. Sellers always try to impress you with the virtues of their wares but the wise buyer remains skeptical at best. Buy the gun not the name, you will be much happier in the long run.

John:

Excellent point, although it's the thoughts of other potential buyers when I go to sell it I'm more concerned with, as I'm sure you understand.

Wild Skies:

No, it is not that gun. The one I'm looking at has a 14-3/4 inch LOP and fits me quite well.

KY Jon:

Thanks for the reminder. I do tend to get off track on the issue of the gun versus the name from time to time.

FWIW, I would rather have the G&H and would pay more for it. More than 10% more, maybe 20.

As I recall, these shotguns were sold at about a $1500.00 premium to the non-branded Arrieta's of same model, at the time.
I want to say they retailed for $4250.00, edging toward 5K for the deluxe version. They had elaborate ads in SSM at the time.
My friends wife bought him one of the packages for Christmas, and when it arrived at my club, I was astonished at it's similarity to my own, non branded model.
I would value it as a catalogued gun with a wood upgrade. Unless it is the deluxe model.
Hell of a quail gun.

Out there doing it best I can.
