Can anyone tell me what grade Arietta this one might be? Thanks.

It appears, but I won't swear to it, that it's a Model 557 with a special engraving--and to my eyes, the engraving appears to have been machine done. It's lacking beaded fences and drop points normally associated with the more costly Arrietas. Kyrie would term it artisanal, John Boyd of Quality Arms will tell you exactly what it is.

Correct. Also, if it is a model 577, Kyrie would term it bottom price point.

Remington40x, Spanish shotguns don’t really come in “grades”. They are too a la cart for the concept of grade to have much meaning. It’s generally more meaningful to talk about the relative amount of skilled hand labor that goes into two or more guns when trying to do comparisons. Price point of a gun and the amount of skilled hand labor that when into the creation of the gun are highly correlated, hence the references you will see to price point.

As an aside Arrieta dropped the model 577 from their catalog, making the model 578 the current bottom price point Arrieta.

As a reference, any VS side lock gun with 30% or more engraving coverage will have more skilled hand labor in it than the run-of-the-mill 577 or 578

Kylie:

Thanks for the suggestions, but none of them really fits the bill. I am looking for a 16 gauge with at least 28 inch barrels, a straight grip and splinter for end, preferably weighing no more than 6-1/2 pounds or a bit less. Not as easy to find as one might think.

The six and a half pound max weight will be the real killer. The Spanish tend to prefer, and prefer to make, medium game guns so the vast majority of 12 and 16 gauge guns will weigh right around seven pounds. Any of the makers would be happy to make up whatever you want, but at present that's going to run you somewhere in the $10k to $20K (USD).

Good luck with your search!

You might want to shop for second-hand Spanish gun made for the "Pygmy cartridge". I know they made some that were in 6&1/4 to 6.5lb category.
