Gentlemen, can anyone tell me if there is some rhyme or reason in the engraving patterns on LC Smith Hunter Arms graded guns.

For instance, my research led me to believe that Trap grade guns had trap shooting scenes on the lock plates. However, I find a 1917 trap grade gun, stamped on the barrel, with two Quail back to back on the locks.

All matching numbers on parts so not a barrel swap.

Could any pattern be ordered on any grade ?

Engraving patterns varied on mid to high grade guns. I don't know what line separated standard engraving from custom engraving but I believe that the standard patterns changed from time to time. This was true of Parker Bros. as well.

Here are your quail, but not in the usual No. 3 oval. Was there a 'T' stamp on the action flats? If not the barrel may have been switched to a No. 3

Most Trap Grade guns had trap shooters on the left lock and a hunter shooting at a quail on the right lock.
Hunter Arms Co. stated "anything within reason" could be had.

Today I received email notification from weapons licensing of approval for permit to acquire L C Smith Trap grade 30" barrels 12g #35748*R.
In 10 -14 days time, when I have the physical permit in hand by surface mail I can go & pick it up from my local firearms dealer. It will be transferred to them from the dealer currently holding & selling it to me & the local FD will broker the paperwork so I become the legal registered owner & its number goes on my firearms license.
So, gentlemen, we shall see. I only saw one bad photo & got an appraisal from the seller; Please pray for me.
