I would like to investigate installing choke tubes in a double barrel gun. There is plenty of material. The gun is not a collector, nor really valuable, so price is a consideration.

Can anybody recommend a gunsmith?

Thanks,

Bill

Briley has a large selection of outside diameters that they can chose from to match to your gun's dimensions. They also have the broadest experience, having done more guns than others. That being said, they are also among the most expensive.

Local small smiths can probably do your job for more than a hundred dollars cheaper than Briley. I've heard good about Bob Day in Pico Rivera, CA and Mike Orlen in Amhearst, Mass. I had some work done by AnglePort that I was happy with as well.

Installing choke tubes for a beater gun won't add enough to its value to make up for the cost. And the benefits of choke tubes may not justify the expense, unless you're a red-hot sporting clays competitor who'll do anything for a 1 per cent improvement in your scores.

As a bird hunter, having had several SxSs with tubes over the years, I've found them to be more bother than they're worth...carrying a case of tubes, choke wrench, etc., and cleaning and lubing tubes. And of course, if you're fixated on having the 'right' choke, you have to carry several kinds of ammo so you can have the 'right' load in each barrel.

No knock on choke tubes - they make sense on single-barreled guns where you otherwise have no choice of chokes - but on SxSs, I think they're oversold. Even with tubed guns, I wound up using pretty much the standard chokes and loads for bird hunting, anyway. So in the interest of reducing clutter and simplifying hunting (and life in general), I've gone back to fixed-choke guns. Chacun á son goût.

I have several guns with choke tubes and I think they are more trouble than they are worth. They create a very nice place for some very destructive rust to form.
But, if you are going to get them, get Brileys. They are the standard and will not detract too much from the value of the gun. Regards from BC, Jake

Mike Orlen would be my first choice, too.

Send the gun to Mike. It will be done right, very quickly and for a resonable price. What more do you need?

I agree that choke tubes are a nuisance on a double gun. I think they were invented just to sell something else to the novice. Pick a load suitable to the hunt in a double gun and you'll never have to have a pocketful of choke tubes. Ported barrels and backboring fall into the same realm of nonsence. Just my opinion. Never been unhappy with the built in chokes on a double. Chops

Being a hun and chukar hunter, there have been times when I wish I had a tighter choke in my left barrel, so I can see the need/want for tubes at times.
