I tell ya it takes really strong will to cope with this virulent condition. Just yesterday I have looked at $1000 Ruger 'Woodside' O/U. Now, 1k buys good number of grocery bags even if you go 'Organic' all the way!

Chuck, I can imagine the disgust you feel after giving your time and expertise in trying to help someone in time of sorrow and need, but I too have seen this happen before and once to me, so that is why I am asking the questions now, to try to make it easier on my girlfriend of 13 yrs. and what you said is good advice, except for the fact that when I sell them, I still have to do something with the cash, which is the reason I bought them in the first place...I would rather look at guns than cash, stocks, silver or gold, and it gives me something to do now that I am retired, so I really need to know some names to contact to get this set up before hand if possible.

thanks so much for your thoughtful reply,

binko

Chief, I agree that the temptation is gonna be great to sell quick, and that is why I am asking questions now, so I can get something setup nbefore, and not have to worry her with it later, with no more than just have her call a number and tell them I passed and have them send a person or cases to fill and ship. I'm 66, only child no one to leave this mess to, and we can't get married for the fact that, that would cut her SS check in half, because she would then have to draw on mine, and she would then only get half of what I get, a real problem.

thanks so much for your thoughtful reply,
binko

Dave, George Jerry, Tim, Rob and Jim, I'm 66,

I think I have answered most of your concerns in one of my previous answers. Main thing I need is some names to call and see what kind of deal I can make now, and get it all set up for her.

I thank you all for the very thoughtful answers,
binko

Of course you could always have her bring them to the nearest Cabela's. It's been said the reason they overcharge for everything is that they overpay for everything.

My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

Binko,
It was not disgust I felt, but rather more frustration to be put in a position that I couldn't provide a satisfactory outcome for. I couldn't get what they wanted. If I live long enough, I suppose I'll be put in the same position again just from pure circumstantial conditions of knowing several with gun accumulations. I dread the day. My hope is that these friends will disperse the guns before they pass on. Reality suggests otherwise.

Bob, I did check with Cabela's, and they said, "sure, just bring them in and we'll see which ones we think we can sell, and just buy them outright." I told them I didn't want someone to "Cherry Pick" the collection and leave my girlfriend with the remaining guns and no good guns to deal with when she contacted the next guy. I don't have any junk, so whoever gets to handle the estate, should be able to take the low end guns and make a few dollars on them too, but I know that Cabela's wouldn't buy them all, so they are out.

thanks
binko

If I wanted to sell valuable firearms today, I would most likely do it through a major gun auction house- last year or so a friend contacted one (in the New England area-where most American guns were made-back in the day-)and they picked up the guns by a bonded carrier at his house, he got his check about 2 weeks after the auction- No FFL-No BATF- No shipping and the return for no reason problems, no counterfeited cashier's checks, etc. It is a premium price I will grant you, but security is the op. word in this internet age of high tech crooks-and the word is- the BATF is watching E-Bay and gun shows with an eagle's eye-best to be extra cautious-RWTF

I really can't add much to this as I have basically taken the same approach. One of the MOST important steps you have to take is to develop a current inventory of your firearms and other collectibles and KEEP IT UP TO DATE. I have identified how and where my collection is to be disposed of right in my trust. If you don't do this you're leaving your family open to fraud.
As far as disposing of firearms now goes I'm in agreement if:
*They are no longer being used. AND
*They are NOT appreciating in value.
I also intend to enjoy my lifelong collecion as long as possible. That's always been the primary reason for collecting for me and I've never lost sight of this. So that's certainly another factor to consider.
Jim

Rob- had a friend in a State with both Cabela's and Gander Mountain Stores- so just for a "litmus test" he took a pre-64 Winchester Model 94 30-30 NRA 90% to see what they would offer him outright- Gander was way ahead of the "Big C guys"- so, a few weeks later, he went back with a Weatherby and-same deal. One of the Gander dudes told him- "we try to work on a 20% mark-up on the used guns" don't know if that's gospel or rumor- but I'll bet you a case of AA Trap loads Herschel Chadick, Felix Bedlan and Jack Puglisi work on a lot greater mark-up than 20%-RWTF

i keep a current record of what there is, what it's worth and what it should bring quick in a location my wife knows to look. it specifies a dealer (that the topic has already been discussed with) to handle selling them on consignment except for some which friends want with their contact info plus others that i'm leaving to people and the ones that i want kept in the family and why they're special to me. and since this isn't something that's "deeded" or "titled" or otherwise recorded with any government agency there should be no need for any court anywhere to get involved in any way.
