I have a small collection of 16 and 20 gauge leather handguards that I can take to USPS and weigh on their scales.
Sould you choose to take this on, I would love to provide the data you require for your calculations, for a couple of my old 16 ga hammer doubles, even a 12-bore Husqvarna M48 (to show some 12-bore solidarity with Anglophiles), with skinny forestocks and 75 or 80 cm barrels. I would also include cm from hinge pin to center of handguard as installed and used.
Thanks, Niklas

FO, I have such info, but will have to look it up for you - wee bit of patience, please. NP, I have to measure the gun on my MOI machine as this is more than just calculations - sorry - and thanks for the very kind offer. Hopefully we will find a way to get to your guns one of these days.

OK, guys, here is some data.
Greener Imperial SLE #69917 16 ga 29" bbls LOP 14 5/8 - weight = 6# 4 1/2 oz, bal to trigger = 4 5/8", MOI at balance= 1.42, MOI at butt = 6.43, HWR = 10.25
With 5 oz Bugden forearm guard 6# 9 oz, 5 1/8", 1.51, 7.04, 10.32 4 1/2 oz weight gain enoung for most shooters to notice), balance moves 1/2" forward (most shooters will notice 1/4"), MOI at balance increase by 0.09 (about 1/2 enough for most shooters to notice), MOI at butt increase by 0.61 (noticible to most), and HWR increase by 0.07. The forearm guard is close to the balance point and, at that location, has small effect on MOI numbers.
Questions?

Any idea what full length 20 ga. Briley tubes in a 12 ga. barrel does to the swing of an English gun ?

Rocketman,
Thanks for information!
Given that handguards I have weigh 1/2 as much (2,0 to 2,5 oz) all those differences you report would be about 1/2, making the difference that could be felt about 1/2 as much and likely not noticed by many/most shooters.
I would presume that the additional 2,0-2,5 oz of the handguard you used is because of thicker leather, giving forestock hand additional protection for barrel heat. Of course, it could be heavier metal spring. With my lighter handguards, a fast round of black powder trap, especially 25 doubles, leaves a very warm handguard.

NP, the handguard is one of the carefully weighted creations of John Bugden. It contains a bit of lead sheet to get the weight up to that desired. This data was taken a couple of years ago to get an overview of what weighted handguards did for balance and MOI. The prime question was could light guns be weighted up without overdoing it on moving balance point and increasing MOI. The results say you will influence balance a lot more than MOI.
You are right that a vey thick handguard could be used for black powder shooting without unduly changing the guns handling dynamics.
Questions?
