I have spoken extensively to real master gunsmiths like David Yale, Kirk Merrington, David Trevallion, Jack Rowe and engravers like Ken Hurst and the Jeffrey Gournet. I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering and had metallurgy as one of my engineering courses. I grew up in a metal shop with hands on experience with welding. soldering, and general metal fabrication.
And I don't have the receivers on my guns re-case hardened or case colored. I leave them as I find them.
And as long as we are checking bona fides I thought Master Gunsmith Ed Landers did your case colors?
Also could you please try to bridge the gap between the guarantee you are advising the public to demand from Doug Turnbull and the one you are giving on your case colored guns. I am having a hard time reconciling the seemingly identical circumstances with the different guarantees.
For your convenience I repeat them:
This is what we should be getting from Doug Turnbull:
"Make sure that you get it in writing, that if the receiver warps in the heating and tempering process or that if it cracks after firing, then the mechanic will assume full financial responsibility for the destruction of your gun and/or your personal injury"
And here is your guarantee:
"SAFETY NOTICE: Buyer is solely responsible for determining that a used gun is safe to shoot. The firearms offered here have not been test fired but have been given a visual inspection only for auction purposes. Buyer agrees to hold seller harmless against damages, injury, or death caused by defective merchandise."
You tell me who is dodging.
Best,
Mike

Ed the bona fides are new information. I gave mine. How many guns have you personally case colored? If the answer is none then you are also relying on the expertise of a gunsmith that you have confidence in, your experience, your training, and your conversations with others.
If you will stop advertising guns here and stop talking about bone case hardening we will get along famously.
Best,
Mike

mike: i am back and refreshed..
sounds like you have never re hardened a shotgun receiver. well, neither have i. so, neither one of us really knows what we are talking about here, right?
it appears that you have never done business with the public? this may explain why you do not understand the difference between asking a mechanic to guarantee his work vs a general used firearms dealer liability disclaimer.
as for old ed, vs ed lander. they are one in the same.
keep it simple and keep it safe...

Well exactly how is Turnbull's situation different than yours as you are both dealing with the public? And if you don't know what you are talking about when it comes to case hardening how can you know enough to advise the public to demand this:
"Make sure that you get it in writing, that if the receiver warps in the heating and tempering process or that if it cracks after firing, then the mechanic will assume full financial responsibility for the destruction of your gun and/or your personal injury"
I do deal with the public and no auto mechanic, gun dealer, gunsmith, contractor, pharmaceutical company, or shell manufacturer would give a guarantee like that. I don't begrudge you your disclaimer of liability. I do think you are grandstanding when giving the advice to the public to demand the one above.
Best,
Mike

mike: i have seen enough botched high heat bone charcoal re hardening jobs to be suspicious of any one doing that kind of work and of any gun that i know has the potential of being burnt chrispy.
i do not intentionally advertise guns here. i do refer others to other web sites to view pictures and descriptions of guns listed there by myself and others. i do not know how to post pictures on the forum. even if i did, it seems redundant to do so. i am sure if the moderator had a problem with any of my posts he would let me know. by the way have you been contacted and cautioned yet?

Oh my god i cant believe Ed your this stupid!
I think you believe anything old Ed tells you. So let me tell you something about old Ed. He is feeding you a whole mouth full of BS just so he can torch your guns. He is a ole timer and prolly needs the easy work. If he was truly a pro he wouldnt be torching guns for you. He see's a easy buck! Geez what a sucker! Also i have seen one of Old Eds sleeve job. Looked like something from the chain saw massacre!
