Right now I'm loading 16 ga. 1 oz. of shot cheddich shells with 16.5 grains of Clays. This is above the recommended load which is only 13.5 grains, and which I tried but was very weak. I don't know where you got your loading data, but if is from the powder manufacturer, you are a fooking moron. Not because you are likely to blow up the gun (well, maybe if it's a POS) but for a variety of reasons. You said the load was "weak", and I suspect that that was not the only weak aspect of the process. Hopefully you avoid folks w/ functioning brains when you go out to shoot and mingle only w/ your own kind. have a day Dr.WtS

Clays is not recommended for 16 ga. by anybody that I can find.
It's a light load 12 ga powder.
A 3/4 oz. 16ga. load could probably be developed for Clays, but it's use with 1 oz. loads would seem to be, to put the best face on it, "inappropriate".

Wonko, you're always a source of amusement to me. Being called foolish by you is like being called ugly by a frog. But you needen't distriss yourself; I switched to Green Dot.6.5
BTW, my reloading manual says 16.5 grains of Clays is OK. The 13.3 came from the powder manufacturer.

Hodgdon does list one ounce 16ga loads with Clays in Win, Rem and Fed loads but the Cheddite loads are all with Universal and the primers are Fio 616 or Cheddite 209. So I am concerned you are not following any of the powder manufacturers data. Sure hope you don't get hurt.

I see that online now, Jerry.
It's not listed in their recent hard copy loading guide.
Clays is not optimum for this application even if listed.
There are several better powders.

Well, Im using cheddite primers and hulls. So I'm not exactly following the recipe, but other than that, I'm in the ball park. The recoil isn't excessive and the gun opens like it should.
At any rate, I switched to Green Dot, which I do have the right components.
I doubt Wonko has ever been kissed by ANY woman, beautiful or otherwise.

Good idea, it's better stuff for this application.

Powders get put into manuals by gun writers and others with access to pressure test equipment. It's pretty straight forward stuff. Load conservatively based on other data, then test. Document the sucesses. If you told me you sent your loads off to be tested or had test equipment, I'd say you should believe the data regardless of published data (assuming a good test). I've seen a few errors in published data.

Yes, and I wonder what equipment they assemble some of those published loads with too.
Who hasn't tried a new one only to discover that the components won't fit into the case without 300 pounds of wad pressure or a can of beans to fill the airspace?
