I recently picked up a Maynard (1882) No.16 target rifle chambered in .38-50 Maynard. It has a half octagonal barrel with a perfect bore. The rifle has a globe windgauge front sight and rear tang sight. The wood is beautiful and is capped off with a swiss buttplate.

I have read in a few places that I can cut down .38-55 brass to fit this chamber. Other than Cartridges of the World, I cannot find any info on bullet weight. Anyone out there developed loads for this caliber? Thank you ...

Joe,
Absolutely the finest target rifles ever built...IMHO...NICE! I just love the tang thru the pistol grip look. YOu are lucky to have it.
Yes shoot it. Bullet weights would be comparable to the 38-55. Check the groove diameter. What are you planning on for brass. I can't be much help because the one I had sometime ago was the earlier model with the thick rim size.
What does it have for front sights?

For brass I bought 38-55 Winchester 2.245" Basic cases from Buffalo arms and a Redding case trimmer with micrometer. I will be making some shavings this weekend. The Model 1882 are a bit more standard than the 1873 cartridges without the heavy rim thickness.
The rear sight is Maynard's rack and pinion tang sight and the front is a windgauge front sight.

Nice rifle Joe, have you done a chamber cast and twist rate?

Beautiful rifle and sight. Would be extremely rare to see one nicer. Any idea how they did the very, very nice index marks on the side of the sight? Would make modern Starrett markings look bad.

Chamber cast was done today with the help of a friend ...
bore dia 0.372"
groove dia 0.381"
twist 1 : 18
dia at case mouth 0.416"
dia at base 0.424"
case length from under rim to case mouth 2.030"

Tapered throat into the rifling is 0.100" long

Suggested solutions were to use a breech seater and trim 38-55 cases. ... sounds like a plan. Now to look for an appropriate mould and have someone make a breech seater.
