2 bore punt gun. cool.

I like the 600 nitro express pistol, as long as someone else is firing it.

A 2 bore punt gun is a fairly small one as I have seen 2 bore shoulder guns. One of the largest punt guns was known as Irish Tom which was once owned by the actor James Robertson Justice. It was 14 foot 1 3/4" long, weighed 300 pound and fired a load of 3lb. 2oz. powered by 10 ounce of black powder. We in Britain are limited now to nothing larger than 1 3/4 inch bore for wildfowling. Years ago a friend from the UK gave me two Ely primed "O" bore punt gun cases. They were roughly 5 inches long and about 1 1/8 O. D. At the time he said they were valued at 75 pounds? He had built his own punt gun and had it proved at Bermingham. Hunted it once a year, the rest of the time he used his 8 bore Greener on ducks and geese. They still have fun in the UK!

Cannons over here too Joe! A famous (over here anyway) Wildfowler called Abel Chapman took his punt gun and outfit to hunt in Spain at the turn of the century (see his book Wild Spain) and they made him register it as a vessel of war which effectively made him part of the Spanish Navy. Punt gunning was not practiced during the war for the fear of being mistaken in profile for a U Boat.

Some years back I had the chance of a 1 1/2" breech loader but it meant a trip all the way to Inverness in Scotland so I passed on it. Something I have since regretted. Lagopus.....

There is available, a video of a punt-gun - in a punt - being fired upon a raft of balloon-ducks at a SxS gathering in Ohio some years ago. If anyone here has the 'puter savvy to post it up, PM me. You and the shooter/owner can work out the M.O. Also, a 4-bore gets touched off on the 'cripples'.

This the same fellow who for years used to fire a blank load from his boat at the Point Mouilee Waterfowl Festival . His grand-daughter, an accomplished duck caller, used to help him by being the 'powder monkey'. He has restored an impressive number of West End of Lake Erie/Detroit River fowling craft, as well.

Anyone interested in the waterfowling clubs, boats and history of the area would find him a solid and documented source. He really needs a dedicated museum to house the material, and a ghost author to produce 'the book.'

Relax; we're all experts here.

Shooting rafting waterfowl by the hundreds

Yessireeeee that's a sport(?) that I'd certainly want to romanticize. Maybe someone could come up w/ a marathon hog butchering video. I mean, if you want to talk about doing manly things w/ manly men WOW that'd be one to see!!

WTF are you people thinking anyway??

have a day
