Is there a substitute for kerosine to use in a smoke pot when fitting things up. Kerosine is getting expensive and hard to find. Home Depot sells it for $43 for 2 1/2 gallon containers. A pint would last me for years.

Amen on Molotov cocktail. I set my shoes on fire. Seems Brownells, once again, has the answer.

What?
Kerosene should sell for a few cents more than off road diesel per gallon.
It's expensive to be sure, but even at today's prices it's just a tad above $4/gallon.

Find a local petroleum distributor in your area that sells propane and bulk fuels and you should be able to purchase kerosene in any quantity that you need at current market cost. Locally small quantities are running $4.30 per gallon.

In the rural south, every independent gas station and small grocery store used to have sitting out front a square metal tank with a hand pump for kerosene. I remember back in the 50s and 60s numerous house fires caused by kerosene wick heaters during cold weather and the fire chief's public service announcements about the dangers of kerosene wick heaters. The last time I saw an old dedicated kerosene tank was between Boston, Ga, and Monticello, FL. It was sitting in front of an old one pump gas station; the type of gas station that now exists only in the corners of an old fart's mind.

I bought a quart of kerosene in the local Wal-Mart in the camping section. They sell it in a blue bottle along with all the other camping fuels. I would think any local sporting goods store that covers camping will have kerosene. I don't remember what I paid, but it was not $43/gallon.

A pint would last me for years. Go to your local General Aviation airport and buy a gallon of Jet-A jet fuel which is highly refined kerosene with additives....cheap...(local airport Fixed Base Operator where a/c fuel is sold) ..... OR: When the Fixed Base Operator drains the Jet Fuel Truck sump each morning they will usually "give" you a small amount at "no charge" if you ask politely ...... Smokes like the dickens in any wick flame device......smokes really good in a Zippo lighter if you want maneuvering flexibility while doing stock work..........

I'm not sure how your smoke pot is set up, but I'd take a small container to the corner gas station and try a dollar worth of diesel.

Yikes!!
I've recently (getting senile so it might have been a a few years ago) bought kerosene from Ace in a gallon tin for what-I -don't-remember but it was no more expensive than paint thinner.
Local general store has it but prefers to sell it a few gallons at a time.

I think that you can burn political bumper stickers and most political adds to make smoke. There has to be some use for them. I approve of this message.

Just use some mineral spirits, or paint thinner, or waste some charcoal lighter fluid. It all burns sooty.

I agree with JDW, a candle is fine unless there is a gale blowing at the time, just run the flame over whatever part you want blackening. Afterwards it just wipes off, no trouble. Best of all at a few cents each a half a dozen should last a lifetime. It's also good for blackening rifle sights that have developed 'Shiny' parts
