what does everyone think about the engraving on this 1981 aya?
Can you tell if machine, chased or hand engraved? Is this typical of Spanish work of that era?

Yep, A2 is 1981.

Those are also typical spanish bird engravings of the period - sort of amusing.

I think the engraving is pretty good. Most engraving enlarged five or ten times looks cartoonish. I believe it is hand engraved. Take a very high resolution photo of the engraving and then look for individual cuts in the engraving.

There is a process where engraving is rolled by a die into the metal and hand chased by an engraver. I don't know if I could tell the difference even looking at a high resolution photo.

I have seen some enlarged Parker Brothers' and Birmingham maker's dogs that bear a strong resemblance to Disney's Pluto.

Most game engraving starts to suffer when enlarged more that twice its original size.

Best,

Mike

Thanks for the info. I did take HD pics and just had them on a 24" screen, lots of different depth to the engraving most noticeable in the wings, background trees etc. The neat thing is the more enlarged we got it the more detailed it looked. Details in the trees in the background, the faint clouds, feathers on the bellies of the birds etc. It looks better enlarged.

Thank you for the info.

Amarillo, do you think the birds are fine on the AYA because you have looked at your Parker A Grade too much?

I like them very much. But even the pheasant doesn't look so cartoonish when viewed from a foot and a half away.
