A gentleman will be along to discuss Mr. Mews and a rifle he built for Dr. Smith.

Leonard Mews was my great uncle. I am posting some pictures for everyone to enjoy. I am hoping to find the missing trigger assembly for the Mauser 98

Welcome to the forum, thanks for sharing. I wounder how many rifle Dr. Smith had made over his life time.

Are you missing the floorplate as well as the triggers on the Mauser?

Do you know if Mr. Mews kept a record of the stocks he made and if so is it still in the family?

I would love to learn more about him. When he passed away he only had one sister left. Most of his stuff was cleaned out of his apartment and sold at auction. The family members that are still alive didn't pay much attention to his guns. The farm he grew up on is 3 miles from here. The shop he worked at was burned down by some kid vandals with some of his stuff in his later years.

As far as the finished .220 I have it's actually a Keith Stegall gun. Posting these pictures I was hoping to learn and see more of Leonards work. I have been doing a little research on the guns. I was looking through Checkering and carving of gunstocks book when I came across Keith Stegall. Here I found pictures of the exact gun that I have. The checkering and lines are a dead match. So now I am a bit confused as to why Leonard had the gun. In the book it shows a gun and talks about a Curvaceous Blond Leonard made for Dr. Smith. If the Stegall gun is in the book then I would think there would be some records on it somewhere? I would like to learn more about it and get a rough idea of what to insure it for.

Tomorrow I will post some pictures of Leonards tools that I have.

Dr. Smith sure knew how to write a check. I'm still on the search for the "black" .300 H&H that I didn't buy at an Ohio Gun Collectors show. I have no idea what wood was in the stock, but it was black as the ace of spades.

I have a Keith Stegall stock that is marked the same way as yours.

Did Mews mark his stocks and if so, how?

My area of study is from about 1910-1940 and I just don't have time to dig deep into the post 1940 gunmakers. I hope you are able to preserve as much of the Leonard Mews information as possible.

I have, for some time, wished someone would take up the study of the post 1940 custom rifle makers, the information is disappearing fast.
