Would really like to see the marks as I doubt Josef Zeller of Dortmund actually made it.

Quite possibly what your seller had was a 16 bore German or Prussian hammer gun that had been sleeved around the turn of the 20th century to accommodate the then military round of 45/70. I have had several over the years that have had this done.

Best Regards, George

George,
I'm confused, how did 45-70 come into the conversation?

Raimey,

Is it possible that the action was sourced from Belgium? The carved fences look distinctly Belgian to me.

Looks to be a horn guard, rather than bone.

Has the gun been rechamberred from 9.3x72R to 9.3x74R and mentioned in the original post. The barrel marking look more to be 9.3x72R or is the 72 under the 8.8 referring to something else.

Oscar,
I believe you are correct, both the 72 and the 13gram bullet point to 9,3x72R.It may still be that caliber( sometimes guns come with ammo or cases, but I have heard of 9.3s72R cases being made by swageing the head of 9.3x74R cases, trim the length and turn the rim. Since the headstamp remains, this can create confusion. I don't know what the actual story is).
