i took a chance and refinished and old stock for the experience, most likely would not do it again, and used Lin-speed as a finish. I followed directions but it does not "feel" as if it has dried "hard," is there some trick to using this or am i just impatient and it will cure over time? Should i have used Tru- oil, tung-oil, or Permathyn?

thanks,

john

I let mine dry (Amarillo) , you in a humid area??
If so, put it in a drying box

Then I use Lemon Pledge wax to seal it.

I am sure others will have more advice

Mike

I like to hang mine in the sun, outside, for an afternoon after each coat, and after the tackiness is gone enough that dust won't stick to it. I usually put on a coat in the evening, leave it inside until the next morning, then hang in the hot sunshine. Seems to do more than the same length of time inside.

My bad. I am referring to TruOil, not LinSpeed.

many thanks for all the advice. Yes, LI is very humid, like coastal Georgia. I also have to remember to be patient, give it time.

LinSpeed is a great product and is very forgiving. Just remember the finish is supposed to be in the wood, not on top of it. I usually thin with mineral spirits about 25% to increase working time.

I gave up on Lin-Speed and Tru-oil in the 70's.
They dried up in the bottles but never dried on the stock.
They are nothing but Linseed oil based varnishes in reality. They should work OK, but whatever the concoction of resins, driers and oil,, they just never worked for me.

Kutter: I have no argument with your comment, but they beg a question.......What do you use?

I'm not trying to be a Smart Alec. Over the years I have used both the finishes mentioned and a number of home made DIY concoctions. And I have had pretty good results. But regardless of the product the key to success has always been to use a very small amount; rub it in well; and patience!

Please note that I am only an amateur and work to please my self.
