I have cape gun that I am looking to put a scope on. I have several questions.

Are claw mounts the best approach? Is there a better alternative? I need to stay away from iron sights, as the eyes are not what they used to be.

I have seen several scopes with claws and the original bases. How much of a gunsmithing job is it to mount these? The top (rings) look to be brazed or glued to the scope. Is it possible to remove these and fit them to another scope?

Thanks,

Pete

Are you going to use a regular scope or get a Red Dot or Holo of some sort?

I have a Red Dot mounted on my 45/70 O/U and for work out to 100 or even 150 it is more than good. Works well with my old eyes too.

Have it mounted out in front a ways, kind of like a scout setup.

It is mounted VERY low to the bore which should help if you've been using iron sights.

Mounted with A.R.M.S. very low mount rings. Only one screw, a stout one, in the inside base of each ring. You only need to drill and tap two holes to acomplish it.

If you want a regular scope they have the same setup in a higher mount. Lots easier than a claw, and sturdy.

Do a web search of A.R.M.S. mounts.......

There are ways that are cheaper and easier than claw mounts. It depends on what you want. Personally I would not put a red dot scope on a drilling. It just looks wrong. Claws work really well but are expensive and it takes someone who knows what they are doing to mount them. They are soldered on to the scope usually. Try http://www.germanguns.com/ They can help. Good luck.

fishdock,

Thanks. I have used red dot devices and have them on several guns. I really do not want to mount one on this cape gun. Again, thank you.

Mike,

Now you have my attention. What are the cheaper / easier methods?

Pete

Pete I was refering to the red dot and drill and tap methods. None of them look right but will work. You can sometimes buy scopes and mounts off of ebay. Search "German scopes" or "claw mounts". 130125930080 This one ends in 35 minutes but doesnt have the bases. You must take care and be sure that the bases are for a double not a single barrel rifle. The best way is to have a good smith buy a set and mount them for you. Good luck

Hello Pete.

There are more options out there than just claw mounts.

Some that look pretty nice are actually a site base with a radius cut for a locking shoulder on the ring (which is also quick release - or not.)

I don't think that it would be too difficult to make it look "right " either.

Swing mounts would be a good choice too! I had NECG install a set of EAW swingers on my Drilling and I like them.

As for looking right? A nice looking gun you can't shoot because of old man eyes is pretty useless...yes...my vision isn't what it used to be either!

I would be more inclined to pursue a compromise position...and get a sighting device that is compact and functional. One that lets you see and hit what you aim at! There are a variety of good red dots out here that offer excellent performance. Zeiss, AimPoint, Docter etc.

Also, Check this out looks a bit more conventional but is a red dot at heart!
