Went to Cabela's the other day to check out some scopes for a .444 cal Marlin. I think I have my choices narrowed down to either a Nikon 3x9 or a Redfield 2x7. Having neither brand on my current rifles, I was hoping for some objective comments from users of these different brands. Both of these scopes are used but appear to be in excellent shape.

Both brands are highly thought of and should be good quality. With your rifle being a .444, I think I'd be leaning towards the Redfield 2x7. Just my thoughts...Geo

My personal opinion is that your rifle would be much better suited with something like the leupold vx2 1x4x20mm scope. If you don't have any eye issues that require or force you to have a scope mounted, why not try peep sights? Lots of high quality functional peeps out there that would be great mounted on a slow mover like the 444.

I had both brands. One was 2-7x Browning branded Redfield mounted on old Browning Safari .300 Magnum and Nikon Monarch Safari 1-4x20. Assuming similar vintage the two mentioned by original poster should be of similar optical quality. Given choice of those two and assuming eye relief of 3" or more I would pick 2-7x, It is smaller lighter scope which means less force on mounts during recoil and larger field of view at low magnification.

Personally, I like the Leupold Ultralight FXII 2.5 x 20mm, with the wide duplex. Fixed power and as close to bulletproof as they come.

The little Leupold that redoak mentions is also very adaptable (long eye relief) and LIGHT--doesn't stress the mounts and rings like some of the monster scopes tend to in heavy recoil arms.
I don't like scopes but my 73-year old eyes need a single aiming point, and a low-power, fixed-power scope seems to work perfectly for me.
As I told my neighbor who seems to favor 20X variable scopes for all rifle uses, "You don't need to be able to hit the individual HAIRS!"....

Many years ago, probably 40 or more, Leupold was trimming there line & discontinued a lot of their reticle choices. Apparently Herter's bought a bunch of them & offered them in their catalog at drastically reduced prices. I picked up an M8-3X with a pointed post reticle at about a third of what they were selling for. Still have it & it still fits the bill for a "Woods" scope for Deer. They are of course no longer available but something similar should work real nice on a .444.

I vote Leupold 1.5-5 x 20 VX3 series...which would be iii, 3, or 3i depending on vintage. I have one on my Double Rifle and an illuminated version on my Drilling. For a higher mag I like the discontinued Zeiss Conquest straight 4x or varriable 3-9x40.

It is triangle post and made by Trijicon in their Accupoint line. If I wanted top of the line shotgun, DG or running game scope I would swallow the hight cost and get 1-6x24mm one. I do not remember which is best color for human eye to see under different background conditions red, amber or green. I do think guys on 24Hour told me green would be best overall. I do not remember for sure.
