As fond as I am of the 16 and the lesser gauges I seem to grab my 12 gauge guns the most when I hunt. I have four 12 gauge hunting guns that cover my hunting from woodcock to waterfowl. I've also done it all with small bores, but 12's just do it better for me.

Not a bad idea, one can get guns for 2" shell (Mexicans make mini-shells of <2" case length) to 3.5" shell in weight range of <6lb to 8lb or more. Very versatile.

I agree. I gave up 28 ga guns long ago & I now have one 20 ga & one 16 ga that weigh right @ 6 lbs, all the rest are 12 ga guns ranging in weight from 6 1/4 lbs to 8 lbs.
For me a 6 1/4 lb. 12 ga gun is light enough for grouse & woodcock & handles shot weights from 7/8 oz to 1 1/16 oz very well w/o excessive recoil. I think that I shoot it better than a 6 lb gun & I like the wider bbls w/a splinter forend & it's slightly more robust proportions than the smallbores guns.
A 2" 12 ga @ slightly over 6 lbs would be fun.

Me too, Mr. Erickson. I love the little guns well as anyone, but everything from clay-birds to cottontails pays more attention when you get after'em with a 12ga.
I have a friend who likes to use a .410 for kick'em up quail and he's good at it. We were shooting doves Friday and I foolishly agreed to shoot my Nitro Special .410 with him when we shoot preserve birds a month from now at a bank directors conference.
I just bought a .410 hand guard/fore-end extender from Mr. Boyd here and I have a leather strap on pad to make the stock longer, so at least the little gun will fit. Perhaps I ought to get busy practicing with it!...Geo

The only time I handle a 12 gauge is when I clean them. Bobby

I like most all shotguns, for dove hunting, I take a different one each trip so they do not fight in the gun vault

I can see it now, you're on your way to becoming the legendary .410 bird hunter of S. Ga. May the force be with you. SRH
May God bless America and those who defend her.

Is that not the case with most people Dave. There are many reasons why the 12 gauge has out sold all others & has become a standard or norm of shotguns.
Here in Australia the 410 is very common to the degree that some household's have a 410 & no other shotgun. The 410 is considered to be the best snake gun & we have many very poisonous Joe Blake's about on farms & in out buildings. Mum feels that she can handle a four ten better in that situation than a twelve. The price of the ammo is near as poisonous as the snakes.
My recent purchase of a sixteen has shown me a thing or two when I go to buy ammo & reloading components. Up till purchasing a sixteen I had never shot one or knew anyone with one. I once knew a bloke with a twenty & know no one with a twenty eight or any other thing.
Twelve is the King here & the ammo & reloading supplies price & availability reflect that. O.M
