I know this question has been answered many times here, but off the top of their head without going to a lot of trouble does anyone recall when Ithaca lengthened the chambers to 2 3/4" in the 20.
My Physical Therapist showed me a really nice one the other day which he had received for his 16th Birthday. SN of 282,301 dates it to 1928.

None of the Lefever Arms Co. flyers or posters I have from 1922 up through 1935 mention chamber lengths. The 1938, 1940 and 1941 posters state 12-, 16- and 20-gauge chambered for 2 3/4 inch shells and the .410-bore for 3-inch shells. The Ithaca Gun Co. catalogs list the 20-gauge as being 2 1/2 inch through the 1926 catalog. Beginning with the 1927 Ithaca Gun Co. catalog the 20-gauge is said to be chambered for 2 3/4 inch shells.

Given the date of that Ithaca catalog, that should mean--assuming they made the change on all their sxs at the same time--that all the Western Long Range 20's are 2 3/4".

Sorry about the mix-up folks, but this Nitro Special was clearly a 16 gauge. I don't know why I slipped up & wrote 20.
It appeared to have had only limited use, was in very good condition, good bores, on face etc. "IF" the chamber length was changed in'27 same as the 20 then this one should have 2 3/4" chambers, but that may not be the case with the 16.

1934 for the 16-gauge change from 2 9/16 to 2 3/4 inch.

Does it really make any difference whether the chamber is 2 9/16th or 2 3/4th inch when we're talking about a fixed breech gun like a sxs? With pumps and autos the shells won't eject, but they will in a double. Does the small pressure rise due to the shorter chamber do any real damage?...Geo

This was my thinking if it was mine, just didn't want to give bad advice. I seriously doubt he will get into reloading. Our local Walmart store currently has a bit of Federal stock with 1 oz of shot around 1150 FPS which I was gong t recommend to him.

Miller I guess its obvious that I asked the question above because I don't think the 3/16" chamber difference makes a bit of difference in a strong sxs like a Nitro Special. Nevertheless, my personal practice is to shoot 2.5" inch shells in my short chambered 16ga guns...Geo
