Holts auction is coming up in June. Its kind of my Christmas Catalog these days. Found one gun which I am going to put in a bid. I like it a lot. Figure if I bid on it, the hammer price will be like all the other lost bids lately, 2-3 times estimated price. I know fellow conspiracy buffs think they put up low estimates for bids, to create an atmosphere of bargains, to spark bidding interest. But a friend in the business thought my bid(s) was in excess of what he expected the guns to bring in a retail shop, after a little cleanups. Hint, he thought I was bidding way too much. When the hammer fell I was low by 30-50%. Add in paying for pickup, making everything right and shipping to me it just gets worse. No bargains to be found there anymore. But still a few extremely nice guns to buy if you get lucky.
But ever the optimist, I am going to try again. If I can get the wife to take a few days off maybe Ill fly over there and bid in person. That would be a lot of fun for me at least. At least that way Ill get a nice trip out of it and even hold my gun for a few minutes. The risk then is I might just throw caution to the wind and end up paying 12,000 pounds for a 9,000 pound gun. Then another grand to get home. Better not let the wife see that bank/credit card statement. She will want something new for the house.

I bought a small caliber single-shot rifle from the most recent Holt's auction and I have my eye on another one in this sale. Amazingly, it sold within the estimate. That makes me question my purchase! One of our fellow board members is assisting with the import. Jon, I am hoping that I have "gotten lucky," but of course, only time will tell. I just hope it shoots.

I've often looked at looked at Rook rifles which have been converted to .410 with an eye to relining them back into a Rook rifle caliber. Been told in many cases it is an uphill battle but still appeals to me. Not this auction but perhaps next time I'll pull the trigger.

They have 2 beautiful WC Scott hammer pigeon guns that got my heart rate up a bit and my wife's eyebrows up a bit as well. Buuuuuuut, they are both straight hand stocks and I'm looking for a pistol grip. But my wife is happier lol

For those that have purchased from Holt's, what is the cost to get the gun to the US? Does anyone know of an agent that will inspect the guns at the auction site? It looks like the sales commission for online bidding is 30%, is that correct?
Thanks

550$ plus shipping from my shop to your FFL and you pay the duty on your gun. Steve

Sxs40, I know Diggory Hadoke's shop in the U.K. offers an inspection at auctions. 50 pounds per gun if I recall correctly. I have not used them yet, but probably will if I see a gun I'm really interested in.

Diggory did an inspection for me recently. I was very well pleased. He spotted issues and game me an honest estimate what they would cost to remedy. Ended up not buying the gun when it went for almost three times the estimate. His service was money well spent. Heck he might even have what you want on hand.

Does the $550 include retrieval from the auction and packaging for shipment?

Yes it does, no hidden costs. If you buy from another auction house, shipping to my exporter may need to be added but we pick up from Holt's and most of the other big gun auctions for free.
