Did any of the top name gunsmiths customize any? I bought a really nice one yesterday with a Mannlicher stock with nice checkering, top side safety ,nice trigger and a redfield peep. It is still chambered in 6.5 jap.

I do think that P.O. Ackley did some.

I have one that I bought in 1958. It was my first center fire rifle and after the barrel was shortened and rechambered to 6.5X.308 and fitted with scope mount bases, I was all ready to go out and pursue the wily ground hog. I still have it, sixty years later. It sports a Fajan stock and an altered bolt handle and is set up for either hunting type or target scopes. I anticipated Remington's .260 by several decades.

I had one in the mid 70's in 257 Roberts, custom barrel after market trigger with a side safety, it was quite accurate. I took it in on trade and shot it before putting back on the rack for sale.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

That is the nicest Japanese sporter I've seen. Most of the time they end up butt-ugly.

Ditto. Never thought an Arisaka could look that good sporterized.

I was looking at a custom Steyr M95 but it was not as nice and it had 308 stamped on the barrel and I was questioning the shop owner about it and he went in the back and brought the Arisaka out and I knew immediately I wanted it.
Thanks for the replies.

R.Marshall,
You posted the Steyr 95 on the GGCA forum, have you found additional info for them? Do you intend to pursue it further?

This rifle is actually an old bench rest rifle which used to win matches in it's day. It was built by the 17 cal guru Dick Saunders (it was his big bore rifle at 6mm!). He made a trigger similar to a Rem to fit and not much of the Japanese military is left and I believe he told me the wood was from Japan. I've had it for close to 40 years and shot it a little but never could reproduce the groups I got with his ammo that I got with it. Caliber is a short Wasp like rimmed cartridge in 6mm.
