I have two original Colt 1878s but both have had the wood replaced. I have a Cimarron 1878 that I'm thinking of trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. It has nice walnut furniture but is featureless.



Colt 10 gauge of higher grade in foreground. Cimarron 1878 in middle. Colt 12 gauge in background. Note the feature around the lock plate on the Colt 10 gauge - it has a sculptured area. The Cimarron does not nor does the Colt 12 gauge.

I do a Google search looking for original Colt 1878s but I find buttstocks that look original but different,

What did the original Colt 1878 buttstock look like?

Thanks! My 10 gauge is a higher grade gun with engraving but unfortunately, the barrels don't match and it has new wood and finish on original parts are worn off.

Here's a higher grade. Sometimes little stock details change over the years.

That answers my question about checking style. I thought some may have had flat checkering.

I seen a picture of a very high end presentation Colt that had a teardrop feature behind the locks.
