Luckily I was able to purchase a sauer 16 gauge and 7x57r side by side from Germany recently. It has a zeiss 6-42 on it and I think it was made in 1956.

I am looking for some information and history on these guns. I have never seen one before and I am curios as to why this was preferred vs a BBF or vise versa.

Thanks for helping a new member who is just getting into drilling’s and other combination guns. Save the guns

Congratulations, you purchased yourself a superb combination gun! For me, BF (SXS) in better than BBF (O/U) because of ease of loading/unloading, not to speak of rich tradition and better looks smile BTW I own both types.

Cheers,
Jani

I'm not an expert or even close to that. My take is that older combination guns were built like this because that was the most common action available early on. There wasn't a lot to do to turn a sxs shotgun into a sxs combo gun. Husqvarna Model 17's were built in fairly large number considering the number available today.

With the beginning of the production of the O/U shotgun building on them became more prevalent, I think for a number of reasons. The rifle barrel set lower in the action, more in line with the hinge pin and locking lugs giving the locking mechanism greater mechanical advantage, stronger lock up without having to make the firearm more massive.

BRNO O/U combo guns are one of the few with the rifle barrel on the top but if you look at them the trunions are very high on the action and the locking bolt is even with rifle barrel. Savage 24 have the rifle barrel on the top but if you try and increase the power of them, rechamber a 30-30 to 30-40 they will pop open.

BRNO 305 12ga/5.6x52R(22 Savage Highpower)

By the way beautiful old combo gun.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Could you pleasure us w/ a few images of the marks on the water-table & on the underside of the tubes. Regarding combination longarms for mixed bag hunting, the 16 bore was the basic platform which was scaled up or down to meet the clients needs in multi-barreled longarms. The O/U typically has the rifled tube as the lower tube in the proper plane so I would say it would be a more accurate combination vs the Cape. Also, on the Cape, the position of the rifled tube, left or right, was determined by overall use. If the rifle was used more it would be on the right w/ a single set trigger.

Thanks for the replies. A BBF with a biggger scope is next on my list.

Once I get the gun in my hands I will post more pictures. This gun is currently in Germany.

No worries. It is a Kerner-Anson Body Action platform with either a repair @ the head of the stock, or it was reinforced @ the factory.

Well done.
Excuse me now please, while I commit the sin of envy.
