Any good books on Sauer guns, specifically pre war shotguns?

Yeah, Cate's text if you don't have it. Dietrich Apel's reference library was just dumped on Ebay.

If Dietrich's reference library was dumped on Ebay, that's a shame. Mike

I talked with Tom Devers this am at the Ohio Gun Collectors show and ask what publications might be coming in the near future. He said a booklet about Sauer Guns. It will not be a book, but will be like # 46 Prussian Charles Daily Imports and # 43 Drillings. I wish it was ready now! Jim

Can't find that Sauer book by Cate anywhere. One on pistols by him but not pre 1945 history of sporting rifles and guns. Darn it. Will have to keep my eye out.

There's a copy on the US version of the bay, but aren't they optimistic about the asking price. I'm pretty sure that book dealer has their own website where someone might check. There's also a 'German hunting guns of the golden era' book that might help, but it isn't a Sauer exclusive book. Best of luck tracking down a copy.

Craig, excuse me for being inept, but when I search eBay, I only get the pistol book coming up. Nothing else. I have also tried Amazon and AbesBooks.....no luck with either.
I was taken back a bit by the asking price of the pistol book.....I typically am not in the "collector" book market....I'm just after a reference book. However it may be that the book I am after is a bit of both.
Raimey, is there a way to search for Dietrich's books without knowing titles or authors? One never knows if there is something interesting until you see it.

canvasback, While you are waiting to find one of Jim's books, the GGCA has reprints of two Sauer catalogs, one pre WW1 and the other post WW1. They are listed on GGCA's site under "Reference Works for Sale". Mike

Sorry about that cback. Try searching 'Sauer Sohn Cate' or throw in 'Waffenstadt', and the book should show up with a double rifle depicted on the cover. It looks to be the same dealer at 'gunshowbooks.' If you weren't aware of it, you can also track down catalog reprint copies at Cornell Publications. It may not be a particularly collectable book, but likely only offered originally in a limited printing. I'd think with a little patience, a copy would show up at a better price, but something tells me you have your eye on a Sauer?

Craig, haven't pulled the trigger (so to speak) on one yet but my dalliances with German guns starting with my 1920's Heym 16 gauge and then my Lindner, have me looking closely at getting more. I may be repeating myself here but a number of weeks ago I was with CJO and were comparing the internal workmanship of the locks from a 1930 Purdey and a pre WWI Sauer sidelock that up here would sell in the sub $1000 range. The Sauer acquitted itself quite well in the direct comparison.
I think I will follow up with some of the offerings from the GGCA as the one copy I have found of Cate's book will cost me pretty close to $450 by the time I get it here. I can buy a Sauer for that kind of money. LOL
