I don't know how many of you follow The Gun Shop on youtube, but it has some interesting topics from across the pond. I found this recent discussion and shooting of 4 gauges interesting.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2adqy1RkAvY&t=2052s
On the gun shop, Nick Horton, the Brit waterfowler, brings two 4 gauges for the young guy to shoot. The guns were modern builds in the Jones underlever style. In shooting these guns, Nick Horton notes in a droll and understated manner he has three questions running through his mind:
How much does this load cost? How much lead do I need on this duck? How bad is this going to hurt? Gil

You aren’t looking for another turkey gun are you, Gil? That thing with TSS could probably kill a turkey on the roost even if roosting on top of the Empire State Building. grin

The way he wines about toting a 12 ga. I suspect he'd have to hire him a gun bearer to tote it...maybe even a shooter to shoot it.

No telling how many quail you could kill on the ground with that.

Just saying...

Buzz, wouldn't be legal here in the States. In Ga., the largest gauge for turkeys and waterfowl is a 10 ga. Federal law is a 10 ga.for waterfowl. A few states allow 8 ga. for turkeys. I believe eightbore was instrumental in his state's allowance of the 8 ga.for turkeys. The 4 bores in the video are massive and are two out of a 15 gun run by a gunmaker in the UK. I believe they are about 25 lbs. apiece. Nick says in the video it's a good idea to have someone else carry the gun to the blind. smile Gil

Might want to take a look at this video as well....

By the way, you all remember that our own George L of Georgia still owns a 4 bore Reilly SxS....weighs in at over 29 lbs as I recall. Wonder what he would charge to let me shoot off one round?

Hi Gil, Yes re illegal. I was just joking and laughing along with you on this thing. I bet that gun would cost close to $50 to load her up with that TSS. Fiscally, probably be best not to miss with that 1st shot!

Thanks for the recognition, but "eightbore" was not the person who helped get the 8 gauge legalized for non-migratory hunting in Arizona if I recall correctly. I am not sure of the gentleman's name, but I appreciate his effort.

There has to be a reason your name came to mind. wink Thanks for the correction. Gil

Buzz,
Not just fiscally, but physically, too. A smaller man shot the gun and appeared to suffer some consequences including a coup contrecoup closed head injury from the recoil. The comment was that the recoil was about the same force as being in a 30 mph car crash. wink Gil

You should've saw Ken Owens shoot his 4 bore rifle pushing about a 1700 gr projectile out the muzzle...there's a technique envoled and the butt plate staying on your shoulder was not part of it.

There is an interesting expiation about firing a 4 bore here:
https://revivaler.com/four-bore-rifle-two/

The last Nizam of Hyderabad, Mukarram Jah, grandson of Mir Osman Ali Khan left Hyderabad and migrated to Western Australia in 1972 where he purchased a sizable pastoral property. He brought with him his grandfather’s Holland and Holland .600 Nitro Express double rifle and seeing there are no elephants or tigers in that part of the world contented himself with doing some much needed vermin control on the feral goats on the property. His method of firing the big .600 NE was to squat down on his haunches and take aim, then press the trigger. The .600 would of course cause him to roll onto his back which he said absorbed the recoil nicely. He had expected the .600 NE to “explode a goat” but in fact even though he was using soft pointed bullets no explosion occurred, but the goats died very humanely

Another use of the .600 Nitro Express rifle was its use against German snipers in the First World War. The Germans used to build steel plates into the trench parapet and snipe through a small peep hole. The .600 would stove the steel plate in and the person behind it. Only risk with the .600 for that purpose is that it can't be shot prone; well it can but not without sustaining injury to the firer. Some other big bore stuff was also employed for this purpose. In looking through a gun list from a dealer in the UK that lagopus has said good things, take a look at this beast:

That's a "beauty of a beast", Gil. I'd pay hard earned money to shoot that old girl.

I have always agreed with Mukarram Jah about the body absorbing recoil when allowed to freely move backwards. I have offered to shoot any gun that anybody owns, which they claim kicks too hard to shoot, and have always done so offhand, standing with my feet close together. IMO, a small man feels less of the actual recoil in his nervous system than a big, heavy man, because he moves with it more.

My youngest son used to shoot a Ruger #3, in .45-70, loaded hot with 300 gr. Rem. hollow points, when he was 9 years old. Grown men would just watch him shoot, and make weird faces and shake their heads. He was deadly with that little 6 3/4 lb. rifle. I'll admit, it would jump around in your hands little. grin

Stan.....you're close to George L....convince him to let you shoot his 4 bore Reilly and film it. I'd really like to see that gun in action.

Stan, Years ago, about 40, when I shot my NID 3.5" 10 ga. at the pattern board at Hunter Field's skeet range, I'd shoot from the sitting position, elbows on my knees. More than once while shooting 2.5 oz. loads, it'd roll me on my back. Gil
