I recently sent my vintage Francotte SxS I n to a Master Gunsmith for a cleaning and to have forearm tightened.

My other request was for any information regarding the date of manufacturer (1900). Are there any sources available for proof marks prior to 1922? The proof Mark is U with a star over it (1923 & 1953). There are no importer marks. The shotgun has a cheek piece, a feature I haven't seen on other Francotte shotguns.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

If imported by Abercrombie & Fitch or Von Lengerke & Detmold, sales records exist, and a research letter can be requested from Bob Beach
http://www.griffinhowe.com/research-main.cfm

Unfortunately, Controller's (inspector's) marks can not be used to date a Belgian gun; they were duplicated and the significance of some has been lost.

The shotgun doesn't reflect either importer on the stampings, only Francotte Arms appears.

Given the cheek piece on the stock, is it possible it was sold in Europe? The serial number is 35XX below the 3590 1929 beginning point.

I believe the serial number list is still on the Griffin and Howe website.

There's a SN list for Francotte on this BB's home page. Go back to it, click on Other Useful Information, and you'll see High Grade Shotgun Dates of Production. Francotte is listed there. If I'm understanding your serial number question correctly, it looks like 1900 would fit for a "medium grade" gun.

The shotgun has side clips and a good amount of engraving, medium grade sounds right. I will take a look at site.

Thanks, Phil
